When does motor tax expire?
Motor tax in Ireland is renewed annually (or for 3, 6, or 12 months). Your expiry date is shown on your tax disc on the windscreen and in your motor tax renewal notice from your local motor tax office.
How to renew motor tax online
- Go to motortax.ie
- Log in or register
- Enter your vehicle registration number
- Choose your renewal period (3, 6, or 12 months)
- Pay online by card
- Your new tax disc arrives by post within 3-5 days
What you need to renew
- Valid motor insurance (must be current)
- Valid NCT (for cars over 4 years old)
- Your vehicle registration number
- A debit or credit card for payment
Motor tax rates 2026
Motor tax rates depend on your car's CO2 emissions (for cars registered after July 2008) or engine size (for older cars). Rates range from €120/year to over €2,350/year for the highest emission vehicles.
What happens if you're late?
- Fine of up to €2,000
- 5 penalty points
- Your car can be seized by Gardaí
