When Does My NCT Expire?
How to check your NCT expiry, understand the testing schedule, and make sure you never miss it.
What is the NCT?
The National Car Test (NCT) is Ireland's mandatory roadworthiness test. Every car in Ireland must pass the NCT to legally drive on public roads. It's operated by the NCTS (National Car Testing Service) and tests your car's safety, emissions, and general condition.
When does NCT testing start?
- New cars: First NCT after 4 years from the date of first registration
- Cars 4-10 years old: Every 2 years
- Cars over 10 years old: Every year
How to check your NCT expiry date
Your NCT expiry date is shown on:
- Your NCT disc on the windscreen (the coloured disc next to your tax disc)
- Your NCT certificate — the paper document you received after your last test
- Online at ncts.ie
What happens if my NCT expires?
Driving without a valid NCT is an offence. You can receive:
- An on-the-spot fine of up to €2,000
- Penalty points on your licence
- Your car insurance may be invalidated
How to book your NCT
Book online at ncts.ie or call 1890 412 413. You can book up to 90 days before your expiry date.
Never miss your NCT again
The easiest way to stay on top of your NCT is to set up automatic reminders. AlertOnRenewals sends you a WhatsApp message or email 30, 14, and 3 days before your NCT expires — so you always have time to book.
