Passport Renewal Ireland
How long Irish passports last, how to renew online, and how to make sure you never get caught with an expired passport.
How long does an Irish passport last?
- Adult passport (18+): 10 years
- Child passport (under 18): 5 years
- Large passport (66 pages): 10 years (adult only)
When should I renew?
Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months after your travel date. This means you should renew at least 7-8 months before expiry if you have travel plans.
You can renew your passport up to 6 months before it expires without losing any validity — the remaining time is added to your new passport.

Don't get caught at the airport
An expired passport means you can't fly. It's that simple. And passport renewal takes at least 10 working days — so you need advance warning.
AlertOnRenewals tracks your passport expiry and sends you a WhatsApp or email reminder months in advance, giving you plenty of time to renew. Set it up for every family member so nobody gets caught out.
